Wooden Boat Plans and Kits

Many boat plans are offered online. At first everything is very confusing, then you start to get some idea of the different types of boats available. Free is not always best or most economical in the end, do your homework. Some Great designs are available free though. My little Apple pie dinghy was a free design

There are many yahoo groups for the better known designs, it's worth exploring.

Often a kit is not any more expensive than building from plans. It also saves quite a lot of time since you don't have to loft the boat, and cut out the major pieces of the boat or source and get materials.

• Many Boat Plans from Bateau.com including a couple of free designs. There is an Optimist Racer kit, motor boats, sailboats, and lots of boatbuilding supplies and info.
• Wooden Boat Plans from Michael Storer. Famous for his Goat Island Skiff and Beth Canoes Michael Storer has a wide range of wooden boat plans and designs.
• Hartley Boat Plans Everything from a tiny dinghy to a 63 ft Schooner. Several Stitch and Glue designs.
• In the boatshed has several free boat plans. Mother lode of free plans. Lots of easy stitch and glue plans
• Boat design.net has lots of links to free boat plans. Many links are not so good. Some are fine.
• Clark Craft sells plans and Kits, cedar strip. They also have plans for many wooden boats from a 6 foot pram to a 28 ft cruiser. Old plans by Percy Blandford
• Free plans for a Bernarda 10 Well not quite free, you must send a photocopy of your money!! Great site, lots of fun.
• Classic Wooden Boat Plans specializes in wooden motor boats. Some lovely designs.
• Hannu's Boatyard has several free plans for one sheet and larger boats. Minimalism boating! Check out the Halfpea, 4ft boat.
• Puddle Duck Racer, the little boat that could. Very simple 8ft boat. Free plans.
• OZ racer by Michael Storer. Similar to, but different from the Puddle Duck, much better detailed plans.
• One Sheet Skiff free plans by McLeod.
• Lady Bug Boats. Plywood Skiff ideal for fishing, plans.
• Mouse Boats on Yahoo groups. Lots of fun in a tiny boat. Atkin's popular design.
• Atkin free boat plan page.
• Italian 10 ft boats class website Many different free 10' models. 10 feet is how long plywood comes in Italy.
• Pocket Yacht Plans including the boatiest of boats the Weekender!
• Nexus Marine Wooden Boat Plans for Lobster boats, sports fisher and Dories.
• Dudley Dix Yacht Design has boat plans for canoes, dinghies, monohulls and multihull sailboats plus power boats.

• Building a Rowing Shell Step by step with photos. Building a composite rowing shell from instructables. Not quite plans but good DIY article.
• Boat plans by Bertil Anderson Interesting site. He has measured traditional Swedish boats and offers the drawings.
• Chuck Payne Yacht Design From a 5 foot tender to Motor launches and sailing yachts. They have kayaks and rowing skiffs as well.
• Free Pram Plan I found this in an old plywood projects book I had. It dates from the 1950's. Seems like a nice little tender.
• Gentry Custom Boats has many skin on frame designs. Including an outrigger canoe, a wherry, several kayaks and more.
• Bateau Bois is a French wooden boat site with lots and lots of information and plans. Well worth wandering through.
• Absolutely Free Boat Plans Links to various plans. Some have already been mentioned but others are less common.
• Wharram Designs This is a treat for Catamaran and outrigger fans. Plans for some very long boats are available. Enjoy.
• Geodesic Aerolite Ultra-light boats, skin and frame designs. Weight of full sized finished boats range from 8 lbs to about 40 lbs.
• D.N. Hylan and Associates has plans for several traditional sailers including a peapod, as well as several powerboats.
• Uncle John's General store offers plans for a skiff that can be rowed or sailed.

• Fineline Boat Plans for wooden boats, steel kits, plus much more from Fineline boat plans and designs. Mostly large boats 18 to 65 feet.
• Green Valley Boat Works kits and plans for Canoes and Kayaks. Lovely strip construction canoes.
• Paul Gartside offers plans, boats and custom boatbuilding. Water Craft magazine publishes free complete sets of Paul Gartside plans in every issue.
• Glen L has boat plans for many types of construction including steel, aluminium, and of course wood. Many styles of boat too.
• Duckworks boat building plans Many designers. Fabulous boat building resource. Plans but also articles and information on boatbuilding. Supplies and hardware.
• Spira International has boat plans, dory style drift boats, Kayaks, Ultralights and power boats. FREE kayak and a Free Dory plan. Good website. He has video and lots of instructions.
• Siskiwin Bay kayak Minimal building information but a really nice Siskiwin Bay kayak. Designer will sell more detailed plans but the informtion is all there.

Also keep in mind while I'm in a preachy mood, that a good set of plans will save you lots of time and if you've paid for them you can actually often contact the designer and get help.
